The Don'ts

As a general rule, if you're wondering if you should remove your jewelry for a certain activity - you probably should! We're here to list out some of the most common "don'ts" in jewelry care.

Don't wear your jewelry in pools, hot tubs, or the ocean. These are chemical risks as well as opportunities to loose your jewelry.

Don't get pearls wet or use liquid cleaners on them. Any chemical or liquid contact can damage their luster.

Don't use household cleaning products, like bleach, with your jewelry on. These harsh chemicals break down metals.

Don't put your gemstones in very hot water, like an Ultrasonic machine, without knowing if it's safe! Not all gems can handle heat.

Don't sleep in your jewelry, this causes unnecessary wear + tear.

Don't wear your rings to the gym or during other athletic activities, not only could you loose your piece but metal can bend.

Why Does It Matter?

Things like harsh chemicals can eat away at your metal over time, contaminating it beyond repair. Take this ring, for example. After years of wearing it as a hair stylist, continuous chemical contact has reacted with the metal. This purple you're seeing isn't on top of the metal, it IS the metal.

The Dos

It can be difficult to know what you ARE supposed to do, especially after reading some things to avoid! When in doubt, give K Novinger Jewelry a call and we'll be excited to give you more details. In the meantime, here are some fool-proof "Dos!"

Do have your jewelry checked + cleaned regularly (at least 2x/year) by a professional. This way any damage can be caught early!

Do be sure to store your jewelry in a clean, dry, and safe place when you remove it for any activities. Laying it on your sink or toilet can be an accident waiting to happen!

Do put your jewelry on last when getting ready. Perfumes, hairspray, and lotions can not only make your jewelry look cloudy/dirty but can also have damaging ingredients.

Do make sure to insure your jewelry to protect yourself from damage and loss. We can help you with this process! Stop by to find out more.

Why Does It Matter?

Having your jewelry checked regularly (the more the better!) can help jewelers catch things like cracks in your metal. The ring you see here, gone unnoticed, may have lost diamonds or had more serious complications!

(Disclaimer - this was not our piece. It was brought to us for a routine check + clean when we found many issues within the metal itself and were able to fix them all!)

We hear all the time "I bought my jewelry to wear it!" and we totally agree...rock your favorite pieces as often as possible! The hope isn't to scare you out of wearing your sparkly beauties - just to help them last as long as possible! All these tips + tricks are meant to help you extend the life of your jewelry.
