What Is An Appraisal?

An appraisal is an in-depth evaluation of your jewelry that results in a detailed, multi-page document outlining the specifications of your piece. This process includes stone testing, precise measurements, photographs, and a professional replacement value. Appraisals are most commonly used for insurance purposes.

Our appraisals are performed in-house by our Graduate Gemologist.

What Is A Jewelry Evaluation?

A general evaluation of your jewelry involves one or more of our trained professionals sitting down with you to examine your items. During this process, we assess stamps and markings to help distinguish fine jewelry from fashion jewelry and may be able to provide estimated values, along with recommendations for formal appraisals when appropriate. General evaluations are most often used for inherited or estate jewelry collections.

How Much Does It Cost?

Formal Appraisals start at $150/piece and can vary based on difficulty. An exact estimate will be provided upon drop-off. General evaluations are $150/hour.

How Long Does It Take?

Formal Appraisals typically take 2-3 weeks. Your pieces do not leave our store, but it allows for the intricate process to be done when time permits. If you'd like an appraisal done while you wait, an appointment and additional charges are required.

General evaluations time length can vary based on how many pieces you have. Contact us for a timing estimate if needed.

Do You Buy Jewelry?

We scrap gold based on the market value that day and the pennyweight of your piece. We are able to weigh your piece and provide an offer while you wait, but typically request an appointment for more than one item. We do not buy finished pieces of jewelry.

How Do I Know If An Appraisal Is Right For Me?

An easy answer is...do you plan to insure the piece? This is the most common use of a formal appraisal. If you need more clarification, we're happy to help! Reach out to us, and we can guide you further.

Who Should I Use To Insure My Jewelry?

Many companies can insure your pieces, and we are able to provide literature on a reputable company if you'd like! If you're hoping to use a company of your choosing, we suggest asking the following 2 questions:
1. Do you insure the piece while traveling? (You'd be surprised how many only cover loss in the home!)
2. Am I able to use the jeweler of my choice to repair or replace my jewelry? (especially important for custom pieces!)

If I Get My Piece From Your Store, Does It Come With An Appraisal?

If you purchase a piece of fine jewelry from our store, we can usually provide you with a "certificate of sale" which will be accepted by most insurance companies.

If you have a piece custom-made from our store, we charge an optional $50 to complete a formal appraisal.
